Pastis (from the Provençal pastís for mixture) is a spirit made from aniseed originating in France and typically contains 40 to 45 percent alcohol by volume. The basic ingredient was originally anise, but today star anise, which originates in China and Vietnam, is most commonly used. Other ingredients include sugar, fennel seeds, licorice roots, various other herbs, water and alcohol.
