London Dry Gin is a category with specific rules for distillation and ingredients, i.e. a kind of purity law.

What may be called London Dry Gin was defined in the EU regulation on spirits in 2008, according to which it is irrelevant whether the variety actually comes from London or is distilled somewhere else.

For London Dry Gin is specified:

  • Minimum alcohol content of 37.5% by volume.
  • minimum 3-fold distillation
  • vegetable raw materials such as grain or molasses
  • no addition of colorants or sugar
  • dominant juniper aroma
