Ingredient: Bitters
Cocktail bitters are alcoholic flavoring ingredients that are mostly used in classic cocktails. They have a more or less pronounced bitter and very intense flavor and are usually used only dropwise or as a dash 'splash'. This is also the most important distinguishing feature from the bitter spirits. They are typically tinctures of many different components. A distinction can be made between those bitters in which a single ingredient is in the foreground and then also gives the name (for example, orange bitters, lemon bitters), and the so-called aromatic bitters, which are very complex flavor compositions.
Cocktail Bitters offer an excellent way to refine cocktails and are even indispensable in some, such as an Old Fashioned.
