Star anise, also known as badian, badiane or star anise, is a spice plant whose fruits are used for culinary purposes. The botanical name of the plant is Illicium verum. The fruits resemble small, star-shaped capsules, which gives them the name "star anise".

Star anise has an intense, sweet flavor with a hint of licorice. It is commonly used as a spice in various cuisines around the world, especially in Asian, Indian and Middle Eastern dishes. Star anise is often used in spice blends, pastries, soups, stews and desserts. It is also used in some beverages such as mulled wine and various tea blends.

It is important to note that star anise is not the same as common anise (Pimpinella anisum), although they have a similar flavor. Star anise is extracted from the fruit of the star anise tree, while common anise is extracted from the seeds of the Pimpinella anisum plant.
